Max MSP

November 16, 2009

This program is the key to making our idea work. This program allows media sources to be triggered by light. This gives us the chance to escape the generic technology of buttons and touch screens etc. Our idea is to have a set of objects relating to a specific emotion, which when lifted off the table will respond to an individually assigned pattern, triggering one of four separate videos.

Workspace

November 13, 2009

What we are still concerned with is the workspace we have to exhibit our project in.

We have the idea of creating an environment in which one can relax, and filter out all emotions, anxieties etc. An example of this could be a lounge area with a sofa and the coffee table next to it. Otherwise we were thinking about a bedroom, which links nicely to sleep, where dreams and the subconscious doors of the mind open up, which is the theme were going for.

If we could get access to a corner of the building, then we can place the table in the middle of the space available to create a more gathered and immersive experience, eliminating the use of walls.

Filming Trip (Weymouth)

November 5, 2009

So after the first attempt failed on Monday, today Campbell and I packed our bags, grabbed the equipment together and went on a road trip down to Weymouth! The drive was really awesome, being able to get out fo the class and hit the road the way we did. As I had mentioned beofre it’s rare getting in a car for me, so this road trip really felt like a slice of home!

We got some shots of a beautiful picturesque view of the downs, clearly going to be used for the joy complation for our project. I also attempted to revive an old couch, which had been ditched down a steep bank. I wanted to try recreate the iconic F.R.I.E.N.D.S. shot, yet with this wonderful landscape in front of us. Unfortunately the task was harder (and the couch was soggier) than it looked!

Extension

November 3, 2009

After hearing that Phil came down with a fever yesterday, the tutors have decided to give us a weeks extension before the units crit. This is really handy for us, considering we actually couldn’t make it to Weymouth for todays filming schedule. Campbell had to renew his car tax to make it road legal, so therefore we have rescheduled to head down on Thursday morning instead, and spend the day doing what needs to be done. This will also give us a bit more time to organise exactly what we need for the crit, so it should be good.

Filming Trip (Bournemouth)

November 2, 2009

Today Campbell and I went round Bournemouth in his car (which is an absolute rarity for me, due to being poor and walking everywhere), and started to gather some footage for the unit. Today we covered alot of subjective matter to do with sadness (generic and personal) which will go well in that area of our project. Below is a few screenshots from the raw footage.

Tomorrow we have decided to drive down the road to the town of Weymouth, where Campbell is familiar with, and recommends a fair few places in which we can catch some more footage!

Feedback

October 29, 2009

Today Campbell and I discussed a different idea for the Future Cinema unit with tutor Liam Birtles. This session he gave us positive feedback, but wants us to modify the concept as it still involves generic triggery which we need to escape from.

Future Cinema Underway!

October 12, 2009

It’s Monday afternoon and everyone is now getting into groups and chucking together some ideas for the new project. With the criteria presentation on 9th November, and the classes only taking place on Mondays and Thursdays for the first term, time is very critical for everybody.

I have decided to work with Michael Campbell for this project, as we have been chatting all morning about an idea. We both think this idea could be visually interesting, as well as technical and interactive. We will speak with Liam about it when we get a chance to, just to get some outside approval and see if it’s actually what he is after in this module.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the case and he commented about it being too much like buttons and simple interactivity, whereas this time he wants us to move away from generic functionality methods.
